Vinyl lounge and cafe coming to Southwest Detroit

Southwest Detroit is getting a listening bar this summer. Tigris, a hi-fi listening bar and cafe, is set to open at 2545 Bagley St., the operators announced this month. The space sits in Mexicantown, west of Michigan Central Station.

The format runs on two shifts. By day, the front of the room works as a cafe with coffee and pastries. At night, it changes over to a vinyl listening bar with a Middle Eastern inspired cocktail menu, light fare, and non-alcoholic options. Guest DJ sets are planned several evenings a week, drawn from an eclectic record library. The point is focused listening rather than a club atmosphere, so the sound system carries the room.

That system is custom. Detroit based Bing Audio, which builds ultra high fidelity rigs for listening rooms and performance spaces, is handling the installation.

The project is a collaboration among music supervisor Fabian Halabou, Inlaws Hospitality, and Kenan Juska, half of the DJ duo Chances With Wolves. Dane Majors, formerly of the listening bar In Sheep's Clothing, is the general manager. The name points to the Tigris River.

The listening bar model has spread through American cities over the past several years, borrowing from older traditions in Tokyo and London where dedicated listening rooms have existed for decades. The idea is simple. You come in, sit down, and the record is the feature instead of the backdrop. Detroit has the record culture to support it. The city's shops and thrift stores have fed serious collectors for years, and a fixed room gives that crowd somewhere to sit without buying anything off a shelf.

Bagley Street runs through the center of Southwest Detroit, a neighborhood layered with Yemeni and Arab owned businesses along Michigan Avenue and a Latino commercial corridor on Vernor. A seated, quiet vinyl room is a deliberate addition to that mix. The area already has music infrastructure, including the venue El Club, but a dedicated listening space is a different proposition.

A mural is already installed inside the Bagley Street space, a sign the buildout is well along. The operators have put the opening at summer 2026, with updates posted at tigrisdetroit.com.
