New reporting from Great Lakes Echo says a Michigan State University study found that some of Detroit's smallest parks cool their surroundings more than their size suggests. The researcher, Xiaowei Li, analyzed 249 city parks using satellite temperature data from 2020 to 2024, and found that parks under one hectare (about 2.5 acres) sometimes beat bigger parks on cooling, likely because they sit in denser, hotter blocks. The benefits aren't spread evenly, leaving what Li calls cooling deserts and cooling oases across neighborhoods. Strait has not independently confirmed this.

Why we're watching: heat is a Detroit equity story, and we'll cover the city's park and tree investments directly as planting plans and budgets land.
