Labor Day closed the splash pads on the Detroit riverfront, and that is about all it closed.
The Mt. Elliott Park splash pad runs on a fixed season. The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy lists it as "Open May 22 to Labor Day 11am - 7pm." The Gilbert Family Foundation Water Wonderland is also seasonal, open 11am to 7pm.
That is the short list of what goes quiet. Everything else stays.
At Robert C. Valade Park, the playground, beach and hill are "open all year long for fun in every season," per the Conservancy, so the sand does not disappear when the calendar turns. The Riverwalk itself stays open seven days a week, 6:00am to 10:00pm.
The fall programming is already on the calendar. A morning yoga session with Urban Solace runs every Wednesday at Valade Park at 8:00AM. Urban Solace also leads yoga at Milliken State Park on Thursday evenings at 6:00PM and Friday mornings at 10:00AM. Two Mile Tuesdays, billed as "An introductory, no-pressure run for all paces and ages," has its next date Tuesday, September 08 at 6:00PM.
Bikes are the other thing that does not clock out for the season. MoGo has rentals at multiple locations along the riverfront, including Mt. Elliott Park, Valade Park, the Dequindre Cut, GM Plaza and the Southwest Greenway. Wheelhouse Detroit runs out of Cullen Plaza with rentals, guided tours and repairs.
Here is the case for going now. September and October are the riverfront's easy months. The heat breaks and the crowds thin, and the same paths, parks and rentals that carried July are still here without the wait for a splash pad.
How to go: park at Mt. Elliott or Valade, grab a MoGo, and the water is right there.
