Paxahau put out the full Movement 2026 bill in late January, and the number that matters most this year is not on the lineup graphic. This is the 20th edition the Detroit company has run, and the booking reads like a festival taking stock of two decades at Hart Plaza.
The festival runs May 23 through 25, Memorial Day weekend, on the downtown riverfront. Paxahau lists more than 115 acts across the three days. The top of the bill goes to Carl Cox, Dom Dolla, and Sara Landry, a spread that covers the festival's core techno audience, the bigger crossover dance crowd, and the harder edge of the current touring circuit.
The Detroit roster is where the anniversary framing comes through. Carl Craig is on the bill, the second-wave figure most tied to the festival's own history. Kevin Saunderson, one third of the Belleville Three, appears as E-Dancer alongside his son Dantiez. DJ Minx, who founded Women on Wax, is booked, as is DJ Godfather, the city's longtime ghettotech ambassador. Terrence Dixon plays a live set, his Population One project being one of Detroit's most consistent live techno acts. Juan Atkins, the third Belleville name, performs as Borderland with Moritz von Oswald.
The booking that reads as the weekend's most curatorially interesting Detroit slot is Kyle Hall back to back with Byron the Aquarius. Hall's Wild Oats label has run since 2008 and pulls from the city's deep-house lineage, the lane of Theo Parrish, Moodymann, and Andres. Byron the Aquarius is the Atlanta producer whose house-jazz catalog has tracked parallel to Hall's work for years.
Collaborations and back-to-back sets are a through line across the whole program, not just the local one. Paxahau's bill pairs Carl Craig with Cajmere, The Martinez Brothers with Detroit's Eddie Fowlkes, Boys Noize with MCR-T, and Ellen Allien with DJ Stingray 313, among others. The festival has leaned on these one-off pairings for several editions, and 2026 stacks more of them than usual.
Beyond the home roster, the international book is where the lineup does most of its work for first-time attendees. The additions this year include Richie Hawtin, Barry Can't Swim, Danny Brown, Green Velvet, and the Italian hard-techno act 999999999, alongside dozens more drawn from the touring circuit Paxahau has built relationships with across Berlin, London, Amsterdam, and beyond. Movement's stages have followed a steady format across recent editions, with a main headliner stage on the upper plaza, a second main stage in the lower plaza that leans international, a covered amphitheater for the harder and deeper end of the bill, and dedicated rooms that have historically spotlighted the city's own DJs. Paxahau typically confirms stage assignments and the day-by-day set times closer to the festival, releasing the grid in stages in the week beforehand.
Paxahau describes Movement as one of the longest-running dance music events in the world, committed to showcasing authentic electronic music, per the festival's press materials. The 20th edition is the clearest test yet of that claim, and the bill is built to make the case.
