Movement returns to Hart Plaza for Memorial Day weekend

Movement Music Festival returns to Hart Plaza over Memorial Day weekend, running Saturday, May 23 through Monday, May 25, 2026. The festival spreads three days of programming across six stages on the downtown riverfront plaza.

This is the twentieth edition produced by Paxahau, the Detroit company that has held the festival contract since 2006. On its press page, the festival describes itself as "celebrating 20 years under the helm of Paxahau" and "one of the longest-running dance music events in the world."

The stages carry the layout Hart Plaza has used through most of the Paxahau run, anchored by the main Movement Stage on the upper plaza and the Pyramid Stage below it, with additional stages worked into the amphitheaters and riverfront tiers.

Detroit names sit throughout the lineup. The festival's official roster lists local and Detroit-connected artists including Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson, Moodymann, Octave One, Juan Atkins, DJ Minx, and DJ Godfather, alongside an international slate that pulls from techno, house, bass, and the wider electronic catalog Paxahau has booked for two decades. Top-of-bill billing for 2026 includes Carl Cox, Dom Dolla, and Sara Landry, per the festival's lineup page.

Inside the Underground Amphitheater, the Respect the Architects exhibit returns. Presented by Resident Advisor with the Detroit Techno Foundation and the Underground Music Academy, the installation honors the city's electronic music pioneers, the figures who shaped the sound without always getting the festival slots or the press. Much of the weekend happens outside the festival gates. The afterparty circuit runs across rooms such as TV Lounge, Marble Bar, Spot Lite, and warehouse spaces around the city, typically three nights deep. None of it falls under Paxahau's contract, and in aggregate the afterparties can cost more across the weekend than a festival pass.

Three-day general admission and single-day passes are sold through the festival site, with VIP and premier tiers adding hospitality and dedicated viewing areas. Tickets are on sale now.

What stays the same year to year: Memorial Day weekend, Hart Plaza, the Underground Amphitheater, the Respect the Architects exhibit, and an afterparty circuit that runs across the city for three nights. The twentieth Paxahau edition looks, by the official program, like a working year.
