Detroit's electronic music festival marks its 25th edition over Memorial Day weekend with six stages and roughly 116 acts on the riverfront.
Movement returns to Hart Plaza over Memorial Day weekend, running Saturday May 24 through Monday May 26. This year is the festival's 25th edition, and Paxahau, the Detroit promoter that has produced it since 2006, has filled out six stages with roughly 116 acts across the three days.
The festival traces back to 2000, when it launched on the same downtown plaza as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival under producer Carol Marvin and her company Pop Culture Media. It ran under shifting names and management through the mid-2000s before Paxahau took it over in 2006 and gave it the continuity it has now. A quarter century in, it remains one of the longest-running electronic music events in the country.
The 2025 lineup leans on the same mix that has defined recent years: Detroit originators alongside the international touring class. Carl Craig and Kevin Saunderson are both on the bill, as are Jeff Mills, Stacey Pullen and DJ Minx among the city's contingent. The headline names from abroad include Charlotte de Witte, Nina Kraviz, Jamie xx and Carl Cox. The full roster runs past 100 artists, so this is a survey of the genre rather than any single scene.
The six stages keep their recent layout, per the festival's published lineup. The Movement Stage sits on the river as the main stage. The Waterfront Stage, presented by JARS, is the second largest. The Stargate, Underground and Pyramid stages fill out the lower level, and the Detroit Stage programs the city's own artists.
Tickets are sold by the day and by the weekend, with a VIP tier on top of general admission. Per Local Spins, three-day general admission runs $365.45 and a single day runs $205.66, with VIP at $277.83 for one day and $499.47 for the full weekend. Some Monday VIP passes had already sold out ahead of the weekend. Passes are available through the festival site.
Hart Plaza sits at 1 Hart Plaza on the downtown riverfront, with the Renaissance Center across Jefferson and the QLine running north up Woodward. The site has limited shade along the water, so bring water and plan for sun. As in past years, the city's after-hours circuit of clubs and warehouses programs the deeper end of the weekend, and those events run separately from the festival itself.
The 25th-edition framing has been the throughline of the festival's promotion this year. The lineup is not built as a tribute, though. The history shows up in who is on it.
