Movement filled Hart Plaza over Memorial Day weekend, but the festival's real late hours belonged to a citywide circuit of clubs and warehouses, anchored by a No Way Back run that turned Sunday night into a continuous block of music.
Movement ran Hart Plaza across Memorial Day weekend, May 25 to 27, with a lineup that pulled in Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson, Fatboy Slim and James Blake, per the festival schedule and WDET's preview. Three-day general admission ran around $227. The plaza is the daytime anchor. The festival's actual late hours played out somewhere else.
That somewhere else is a citywide afterparty circuit that books over the same weekend every year, spread across clubs and warehouses within a short drive of downtown. Resident Advisor's Movement guide laid out a week's worth of programming at TV Lounge, Marble Bar, Spot Lite, the Tangent Gallery and a long list of smaller rooms. The math is familiar to anyone who has done the weekend: budgeting for afterparties on top of a festival pass can run another $50 to $100 a day, by WDET's estimate, and many serious heads spend more on the late rooms than on the plaza itself.
The throughline is No Way Back. Interdimensional Transmissions has run the party since 2007, and in 2024 it again landed at the Tangent Gallery as the centerpiece of the promoter's Return to the Source weekend. The format does not change: BMG and Erika curate, the lineup is not announced in advance, and the music runs from night into the next day. Per Resident Advisor's event listing, the Sunday-into-Monday session opened a long continuous block billed as running roughly 32 hours, a closing marathon that outlasts everything else on the calendar.
The Tangent's weekend was not a single party. Interdimensional Transmissions also staged Tresor 313 on Saturday, a nod to the Berlin club's Detroit roots, with Model 500 performing live alongside DJ Stingray 313 and DJ Bone, per the Resident Advisor listing. One wristband covered the run of parties at the venue.
The clubs carried their own anniversaries. Marble Bar hosted Texture's ten-year celebration across the weekend, a two-day program built around Laurel Halo, Jlin and Batu, per Resident Advisor's guide. TV Lounge handed its rooms to Soul Clap's House of EFUNK, a multi-day, multi-stage takeover. Spot Lite ran some of the weekend's official Movement afterparties, including a Glitterbox night and a DJ Minx House Your Life session that listed Honey Dijon, Kevin Saunderson and DJ Holographic.
The official festival afterparties had their own anchors too. WDET noted a Spot Lite opening party with Derrick Carter and a Detroit Defected night built around Carl Craig and Inner City, both 21-plus, both pushing toward $55 to $65 a ticket.
Add it up and the picture is the same as most years. The plaza books the names. The clubs and warehouses keep the music going long after Hart Plaza goes quiet, and the people who travel for this weekend plan their nights around the late rooms as much as the stages. The festival is the anchor. The circuit is the festival.
