Wayne State University is giving its emerging school of public health a building of its own on Cass Avenue.
At its October 2 meeting, the university's Board of Governors took up a plan to renovate and expand the Emma Lazaroff Schaver Building at 5451 Cass Avenue into a dedicated home for the new school.
Schaver is a good candidate for a second act.
Dr. Lisa Prosser started as the school's inaugural dean on October 1, the day before the board met.
The building news arrived alongside a strong set of numbers. Wayne State now enrolls more than 24,000 students, and its full-time first-year enrollment grew 4.8 percent over the prior year, the largest incoming class in university history. Transfer enrollment rose 3.3 percent.
Research is climbing too. The university reported $291.7 million in research and development expenditures, a 16.3 percent increase that puts it at No. 112 nationally and No. 75 among public universities.
Here's why it matters for Detroit.
The paperwork is public. The capital outlay request lays out the Schaver plan in full and sits with the board's October 2 meeting materials.
