Detroit's city council has a simple ask for Tuesday, and it costs nothing: wear pink.

The push is called Shades of Pink Tuesday, and it comes from Council Woman At-Large Mary Waters, a breast cancer survivor. The ask itself is plain. City of Detroit employees and residents are encouraged to wear pink on Tuesday, October 6th.

That's the whole program. There's no ticket, no RSVP, no block you have to show up on. A pink shirt, a pink scarf, a pink tie on a Tuesday morning, and you're in. The point is to make breast cancer awareness visible for a day across offices and neighborhoods that don't usually coordinate on much of anything.

The effort runs out of the City Council At-Large office. The listed home base is the City Council Office at 2 Woodward Ave., Suite 1340, Detroit, MI 48226, with a 9:00 a.m. start on the city's calendar. Anyone who wants to ask about it can call (313) 224-3443.

What makes this one land is who's asking. The city's event listing names Waters as a survivor, which puts the request in a different register than a form memo from a desk downtown. It's one person who has been through it asking a whole city to spend a day in her corner, and in the corner of everyone still in treatment.

That kind of ask scales in a way a gala never could. Nobody has to buy a plate or clear a calendar. A city worker at a service counter, a bus driver, a teacher, a barber on the east side can all take part at the same time for the price of one pink thing they probably already own. Visibility is the point, and in a city this size, a sea of pink reads as a message on its own.

If you want to join in, the move is easy. Wear pink on Tuesday, October 6th, and if you want to tie it to the city's effort directly, you can reach the At-Large office at the number above. The full listing sits on the City of Detroit public calendar, where the date, the office, and the ask are all spelled out.

It's a small gesture by design. Pull something pink out of the closet, and Detroit spends a Tuesday looking out for its own.
