The City of Detroit is taking requests from residents and small businesses for free trees planted on the berm out front, part of a push to plant 75,000 trees across the city by 2027.
If you have ever looked at the strip of grass between your sidewalk and the street and thought it could use some shade, Detroit has an answer, and it costs nothing.
The city is accepting requests from residents and small businesses for free trees planted on the berm in front of their property, as first reported by WDET. The berm is that slice of green between the sidewalk and the street, the public right-of-way most people mow but never think of as theirs to plant.
There are two ways to ask. Residents can fill out the official form at bit.ly/DetroitTreeRequest or email [email protected]. There is also a phone line at (313) 628-0229.
Once a request comes in, the work happens in stages. Utility crews mark underground lines with colored flags and spray paint, the exact planting spot gets marked with neon paint, and a city-approved vendor delivers the tree and mulch to the berm and plants it.
The care does not stop at planting. City-approved vendors handle the watering and trimming for the first three years, and the homeowner takes over after that.
This is not a small operation.
