Elmwood Cemetery lights up for Elmwood Alight October 1 to 3

Elmwood Cemetery is opening its gates after dark again.

Elmwood Alight, the immersive after-dark experience returning to Elmwood Cemetery this fall, runs October 1 to 3, 2026, turning the 180-year-old grounds into a walk of light and sound.

The cemetery calls the night a celebration of "light, art, and music, all designed to evoke reflection and wonder," and it makes clear the event is suitable for all ages and "not spooky." That framing sets it apart from the haunted-house season around it.

Visitors move through lighting displays cast on the cemetery's architecture, monuments, and trees, past site-specific installations by Detroit artists, with sound and music stations set along the route. There are hands-on contemplative experiences, plus beer, wine, and local refreshments along the way.

Guided tours are new this year, offered in two tracks: a behind-the-scenes walk led by Elmwood Alight curators and guest artists, and a thematic history tour led by foundation director Amy Elliott Bragg exploring themes of time, transformation, and impermanence. The $10 guided tour is offered as either a behind-the-scenes look or a thematic history walk.

Guided tours begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

General admission is $25, and children under 10 get in free. A premium ticket is $35, or two for $65, and a VIP ticket is $95. The premium tier adds a discounted drink ticket and a glow-in-the-dark sticker. The VIP ticket includes a guided tour of choice, a Thursday happy hour, two drink tickets, a glow-in-the-dark sticker, and a commemorative poster. Guided tours are a $10 add-on, and drink tickets run $12. Tickets are on sale now through Eventbrite.

For a city that keeps finding new uses for its landmarks, Elmwood Alight turns one of Detroit's oldest and quietest places into somewhere to gather after nightfall and take a slow walk through 180 years of the city's history. It runs three nights only, and then the grounds go quiet again.
