Detroit Artists Market has gathered ten artists for a new group show about the pull of memory. The exhibition is called "The Intimacy of Memory," and the market announced it on September 18. The ten artists work across three mediums, installation, fiber, and painting, and all of them circle the same theme: "nostalgia and longing for the past."
The artists are Jide Aje, Meli Bandera, Cydney Camp, Alexander Daniels Escobar, Madhurima Ganguly, Fatema Haque, Reid Hulleza, Paloma Núñez-Reguiero, Miriam Uhura, and Dino Valdez.
The show is curated by Sydney Frakes, creator and director of Threads: The Art Exchange. The market describes her curatorial approach as "emotionally attuned, grounded in dialogue with artists and attentive to how a body of work unfolds over time."
The exhibition looks at how "sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch each spark memory and recollection," opening what the market calls "a dialogue between memory, movement, and culture." That is a lot of ground for one room, and the mix of mediums is the point. A fiber piece asks to be read differently than a painting, and an installation asks you to stand inside it.
Memory is well-worn territory for a gallery, but it lands differently when the artists come from as many directions as this roster does. Personal recollection and shared, collective memory both sit on the walls here, which is a quieter way of saying the show is about where people come from and what they carry.
Detroit Artists Market sits at 4719 Woodward Avenue, on the stretch of Woodward that runs through the city's cultural core. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and admission is free to the public.
That free door matters. A ten-artist survey like this one is the kind of thing you can walk into on a lunch break or a Saturday afternoon without deciding in advance whether it is worth a ticket. Bring a friend, take your time, and see which of the ten stops you in your tracks.
The full announcement, with the complete artist list, is posted on the market's site at detroitartistsmarket.org.
