The meet is the final competition of the artistic Development Program season, where National Team spots and titles are awarded. It is the capstone of the pipeline that USA Gymnastics, the sport's Indianapolis-based national governing body, runs each year.
The field is deep. It brings together junior and senior Level 10 women along with Level 8 and 9 Junior Elite men and Level 10 Junior National and Junior Elite men. On the men's side, Regional Team and club champions get decided, and the women crown a Super Team.
USA Gymnastics posted the news on September 1, naming Detroit alongside the regional championships that are part of the same Development Program season. The Detroit championship headlines a slate of 2027 host sites that USA Gymnastics set in the same announcement, made together with the Detroit Sports Commission.
"Bringing the USA Gymnastics Development Program National Championships to Detroit is exactly the type of opportunity the Detroit Sports Commission works to create for our region," said Marty Dobek, executive director of the Detroit Sports Commission.
The same announcement also named the regional Eastern and Western championships for the season. The women's Eastern Championship lands May 6 to 9 at the Alachua County Sports and Events Center in Gainesville, Florida, with the Western the same weekend at the Moody Gardens Hotel Convention Center and Resort in Galveston, Texas. The men compete April 30 to May 2, the Eastern at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center and the Western at the Reno Events Center in Nevada.
The payoff for the city is the crowd a national championship pulls in. Events like this bring athletes and their families into town, supporting local hotels and restaurants while putting Detroit in front of visitors from across the country.
For a long weekend next May, Huntington Place in downtown Detroit belongs to the country's rising gymnasts.
