Detroit Bookfest returning to Eastern Market on July 19 for its ninth year

Detroit Bookfest returns to Eastern Market on Sunday, July 19. Ninth year. Still free.

The 9th Annual Detroit Festival of Books runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2934 Russell Street. More than 300 vendors from across the United States and Canada fill Shed 5 and the surrounding plaza, selling books alongside vinyl records, comic books, creative arts, and vintage board games. Organizers anticipate up to 20,000 attendees. Bookfest has grown every year since it launched in 2017.

For 2026, the organizers expanded the event into a full weekend, calling it "Book-cation Weekend." On Saturday, July 18, a self-guided bookstore tour sends readers to approximately 85 independent shops across southeast Michigan and Southern Ontario, including John K. King Books, Pages Bookshop, and Next Chapter Books. The idea is to spend Saturday with a local shop, then bring that same energy to the market on Sunday morning.

At Eastern Market, the kids' zone returns on the west side of Shed 5 in the DTE Plaza area, facing Russell Street, with new activities for 2026 added to the lineup. A DJ spinning funk music runs all six hours. Street performers work the plaza, and concert ticket giveaways move through the crowd throughout the day. Children can take part in hands-on projects at various points throughout the event.

Birdie's Bookmobile, the Detroit nonprofit that distributes free children's books across the city, sets up outside Shed 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers there read children's books aloud continuously, while yellow collection bins for donated books sit at multiple spots around the grounds.

After the festival wraps at 4 p.m., the official afterparty runs at Detroit City Distillery from noon to 6 p.m. Entry is free.
