Detroit's Hispanic Heritage Month calendar fills up along Vernor, from a summit to a mariachi tour

Hispanic Heritage Month runs September 15 through October 15, and Detroit's fall calendar is filling in to match it.

The stretch of West Vernor Highway that anchors Southwest Detroit has a leadership summit, a museum evening, free library programming, and a mariachi concert on the way, part of the statewide observance Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed for Michigan. The lineup was compiled by Detroitisit.

The month has a fixed reason for its odd start date. It begins on September 15 because that is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, with Mexico and Chile marking theirs on September 16 and 18. Congress first set aside a week for the observance in 1968 and later stretched it to a full month.

There is scale behind the celebration. The U.S. Hispanic population reached 70.1 million as of July 1, 2025, about 21% of the country and its largest racial or ethnic minority, with a median age of 31.1 years.

Vernor Highway, a neighborhood evening open to anyone who walks in.

The HLAtino Summit 2026 lands Thursday, October 1, from 6 to 10 p.m. At Candela Detroit, 3564 Vernor Highway, billed as Detroit's first Latino leadership event.

The Detroit Historical Society holds its Hispanic Heritage Month celebration Saturday, October 10 at the Detroit Historical Museum. Admission is free for members and $15 for adults.

Mariachi Herencia de Mexico brings its tour to the Macomb Center in Clinton Township on Sunday, October 25 at 3 p.m., a ticketed concert that stretches the season past the official end of the observance.
