Rent Free Coffee and Community, a coffee shop and listening venue, is headed to Eastern Market

A new coffee shop and music venue called Rent Free Coffee and Community is headed to Eastern Market. The business bills itself on its own site as a coffee and music space "coming soon" in 2026, pairing specialty coffee with curated and live music. The owner is Lamont Leak, a Detroit entrepreneur with a background in hospitality, television, and music.

The concept runs on two clocks. By day it is a coffee shop. In the evening it shifts toward a bar with small bites and music played as the centerpiece rather than as background. Leak has described the idea on social media as "Craft cocktails + small bites + a vibe; something familiar and different," a line he posted to promote the project (via What Now Detroit). The room is being set up around recorded and live music, a listening format that treats the sound itself as the draw.

The Eastern Market location sits at 1347 E. Fisher Freeway, on the south end of the district near Russell Street, close to Supino Pizzeria and Zeff's Coney Island and next to Materia Gallery, per What Now Detroit and Crain's Detroit Business. The business also carries a separate footprint on the city's books. In the City of Detroit's Motor City Match Round 25 awards, a venture listed as Rent Free Coffee Co. received a $50,000 grant, described in the city's announcement as a "specialty coffee shop and social club" in the East Village neighborhood at 10103 Kercheval.

Leak has said the project has been roughly three years in the making, according to What Now Detroit and Crain's. As of the spring reporting, an opening was targeted for the first half of the year, with the broader window described as this summer. The business has not published a firm opening date; its own site lists the venue as coming soon and points followers to its Instagram, @rentfreedetroit, for updates. Coffee, cocktail, and food menus are expected closer to opening.

The pairing of a daytime coffee operation with an evening music room is the part worth watching. The two sides ask for different staffing, different equipment, and different reasons to walk in the door. Eastern Market, with its Saturday crowds and its growing run of restaurants and bars, gives a hybrid like this the mixed foot traffic it needs. Whether Rent Free becomes a morning regular spot, an evening destination, or both will come down to how the room is run once the doors open.
