Detroit Techno Week is official. Mayor Mary Sheffield signed a proclamation this week designating the stretch through Memorial Day weekend as Detroit Techno Week, timed to Movement Music Festival's return to Hart Plaza.

The proclamation marks a milestone. Paxahau celebrates two decades producing the city's most influential electronic music event. Movement runs May 23 through 25 at Hart Plaza. The festival weekend generates significant economic activity for the city, and the proclamation names that directly, framing the festival as an economic engine alongside a cultural one.

Movement released a full lineup of more than 115 artists this week. Sara Landry and Dom Dolla join the previously announced Carl Cox at the top of the bill. The Dare, Boys Noize, Juan Atkins, Peezy, and jessica Care moore are also on the card. Kevin Saunderson, one of Detroit's techno originators, returns with a solo set and a performance alongside his son Dantiez as E-Dancer.

The city's proclamation honors Paxahau's two-decade tenure directly, recognizing the international recognition the festival brings to Detroit's creative talent and cultural legacy.

The origin story animates the whole week. Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson — the Belleville Three — built Detroit techno out of basement studios and underground clubs in the early 1980s before it became a foundation of modern electronic music worldwide. The mayor's office leaned into that history, with the proclamation describing Detroit as the birthplace of techno and citing the genre's ongoing economic impact.

Movement festival runs from May 23rd to the 25th.
