Castalia, the fragrance-paired Midtown cocktail bar, will close New Year's Eve after eight years

Castalia, the Midtown cocktail bar that built its reputation on pairing drinks with custom fragrances, announced in late October that it will serve its last guests on New Year's Eve. The bar will close December 31, 2025, after roughly eight years in business.

The owners say the decision is by choice, not necessity. In the closing statement posted on the bar's website, the team wrote that it "didn't run out of money or ideas," has no issue with its landlord, and is happy in its neighborhood. "After a marvelous run of 8 years," the statement reads, "we chose to go out on top."

Castalia operated in the lower level of a Victorian building at 3980 Second Avenue, inside the same space as Sfumato, the perfumery run by the same team. The bar's signature was sensory: cocktails served alongside fragrances meant to be experienced together. The room was small, an intimate space seating roughly 18, and reservations were the norm.

Co-owner Kevin Peterson, who founded the bar with Jane Larson, has framed the closing as a creative decision rather than a business failure. The structures the team built to grow the bar, he has said, eventually became the things holding it in place, and the questions Castalia set out to answer have largely been answered. Speaking on a Daily Detroit podcast interview, Peterson described the real reward of the work as the people and the community role rather than the bar itself. "If you like the people, if you're intrigued by the business, if you want a role in the community," he told Daily Detroit, "that's the real reward." He has said he plans to keep writing and experimenting with flavor and fragrance after the close.

The bar earned national attention during its run and a spot on industry discovery lists, and Peterson's book, "Cocktail Theory," was a Spirited Award finalist at Tales of the Cocktail, per the awards program. Peterson holds a doctorate and is often credited as Dr. Peterson.

The team has said new ownership and a new direction will take over the room after December 31. Sfumato, the perfumery, continues. Castalia, as it has existed, does not.

The bar planned to keep regular hours through the end of the year. Its closing statement leaned philosophical, borrowing a line attributed to Leonard Nimoy: "A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory."
