The 8th annual Detroit Festival of Books drew a projected 250-plus vendors to three Eastern Market sheds and grew into a three-day weekend for the first time.
The 8th annual Detroit Festival of Books ran from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2025, across Eastern Market's Sheds 4, 5, and 6, with tents filling the space around them. Admission was free.
The festival, known to most people as Detroit Bookfest, billed itself as the largest book event in Michigan. Organizers projected more than 250 vendors, authors, and illustrators selling new and used books, antiquarian volumes, rare editions, comics, vinyl, and Detroit-area memorabilia, with sellers coming from across the United States, Canada, and beyond. Vendors keep all of their proceeds.
Bookfest started with founder Ryan Place, who, by his own account, came up with the idea after wandering the four floors of John K. King Used and Rare Books downtown and deciding Detroit needed something on that scale, only bigger and outdoors. The first edition, in the summer of 2017, drew about 10,000 people to a single Eastern Market shed. The festival has expanded across three sheds since then.
"We are delighted to feature 250 vendors, authors, and illustrators, offering books, antiquarian items, and historical memorabilia largely focusing on Detroit-area culture and history," Place said in the festival's own announcement.
The 2025 edition stretched the event into a full weekend for the first time. Saturday, July 19, was a self-guided bookstore tour built around a free printed and online list of 85 shops across southeast Michigan and Windsor-Essex in Ontario, among them John K. King, Pages Bookshop, and Next Chapter Books. Sunday was the main market day at Eastern Market, with free children's activities staged in DTE Plaza between Shed 5 and Russell Street. The official afterparty followed at Detroit City Distillery, with a book-themed cocktail menu and free entry.
"We are thrilled to see how Detroit Bookfest has morphed from a one-day event into a 3-day weekend-long extravaganza," Place said.
The festival also doubles as a children's book drive. Collection bins around the market gathered gently used kids' books for Birdie's Bookmobile, a Detroit nonprofit that hands them out to children across the city. Organizers set a goal of 2,000 donated books for 2025.
The 9th annual Detroit Festival of Books is set for Sunday, July 19, 2026, and the 10th for Sunday, July 18, 2027, both at Eastern Market.
