Three founders of the Detroit sound shared one set at Movement

Three of the people most responsible for the sound Detroit sent out into the world ended up at the same set on the opening night of Movement 2025.

Carl Craig, Moodymann and Mike Banks closed out the Detroit Love showcase on the Stargate stage at Hart Plaza on Saturday, May 24, the first day of the festival. The set ran from 10 p.m. to midnight as the last booking of a showcase curated by Craig's traveling Detroit Love party series, per the set times Movement released ahead of the weekend (reported by 5 Magazine and CBS Detroit). Movement billed it plainly as "Carl Craig b2b Moodymann ft. Mike Banks."

What that billing flattens is how the set actually worked. When the three of them later released the night as Resident Advisor podcast RA.1026, RA described the configuration directly: "Mike Banks on keys, Carl Craig on the decks and Moodymann on the mic." It was less a back to back than three roles braided together, with Banks playing live, Craig steering the records and Moodymann working the crowd.

The reason that lineup carries weight is the catalog standing behind it. Craig runs Planet E. Moodymann built Mahogani Music and KDJ. Banks co-founded Underground Resistance. Put those three names in one frame and you have covered a large share of the Detroit electronic music that has traveled the furthest since the late 1980s. Crack Magazine, writing up the completed 2025 lineup, listed the three together as one of the festival's headline draws.

The set itself leaned local. The RA episode notes a live take on "The Final Frontier" and a reworked "Knights Of The Jaguar," moving through Motor City staples rather than a greatest-hits victory lap. Detroit Love was one of several hometown showcases on the bill that weekend, alongside Kevin Saunderson's KMS Records and DJ Minx's House Your Life.
