Minnie's Detroit opened at 5221 Trumbull in Woodbridge with a grand opening celebration on Saturday, January 25, 2025. The bar and restaurant is owned by Yvonne Byrd, a longtime fixture of Detroit nightlife, who named the place after her mother, Minnie.
The venue runs as a full-service restaurant, cocktail bar, and live entertainment room. The opening-night celebration featured performances from local artists and was billed by the venue as a night of "culture, cuisine, and connection," with craft cocktails, booth and bottle service, and the venue's full menu.
The kitchen is built around what the menu calls Minnie Plates. Listed dishes include lollipop lamb chops, Minnie's wings, salmon, smoked turkey leg, turkey chops, and Alfredo pasta with optional protein. The bar also leans into a weekly schedule of programming: Wine and Wings on Wednesdays, R&B on Thursdays, comedy on Fridays, and karaoke on Sundays, per the venue's own listings.
One of the draws is a late-night kitchen. According to the venue, Minnie's serves a midnight brunch on Friday and Saturday that runs from midnight to 3 a.m., one of the few legitimately late kitchens in the city. The dining room is open Tuesday through Sunday and closed Mondays.
Byrd has run Detroit bars for more than a decade. Metro Times, which interviewed her, reported that she previously operated Vondie's on the River, Epitome Lounge, and Minnie's Rhythm Cafe before opening this location, and that she purchased the Trumbull building in 2023 with plans that include a boutique hotel in the back. Minnie's Detroit is the latest of those ventures and the first she opened in a building she owns.
