The downtown wine counter seats about ten, takes no reservations, and a year after opening became Michigan's lone finalist for a 2026 James Beard Award.
The room seats about ten. A narrow shelf along the far wall gives a few more people somewhere to stand and lean. There is no reservation system. You walk in, order at the counter, find a spot, and wait for someone to leave. That is most of the Bar Chenin experience, and it is the point.
Nick Arone opened the wine bar in early March 2025 inside the Siren Hotel at 1509 Broadway in downtown Detroit, in a small space tucked behind the lobby. Arone, who tended bar at Vecino in Midtown before returning to the Siren, leads the program. The hotel sits inside the restored Wurlitzer Building and is run by the design and development firm ASH.
The focus is natural and biodynamic wine. The list leans on small producers and Old World grapes that most Detroit wine lists skip, with bottles chosen to connect what is in the glass to the land it came from, according to the venue's operator. There is a short cocktail list and a tight food menu of small plates, and the bar makes its own ice cream in rotating flavors.
Arone has been direct about the thinking behind the list. "Natural winemakers are people who are really against the grain," he told Hour Detroit, framing the wines he pours as the cleanest, most back-to-earth option he could put in front of a guest.
A little over a year after opening, the bar drew national attention. The James Beard Foundation named Bar Chenin a 2026 finalist for Best New Bar, the only Michigan business to advance to the final round of awards that year, per the foundation's list and Crain's Detroit Business. The other finalists were spread across the country, in Boise, New York, Oklahoma City, and Providence. At the ceremony in Chicago on June 15, 2026, the category went to Loma in Providence, and Bar Chenin did not win, according to Crain's.
Bar Chenin is part of a small cluster the Siren has built out, alongside Periodicals, a partnership with the Detroit magazine shop that brings rotating art, design, and fashion titles into the hotel.
