Movement returns to Hart Plaza for Memorial Day weekend with six stages, more than 100 artists, and a run of showcases anchored by Detroit Love, KMS Records, and a Metalheadz anniversary.
Movement returns to Hart Plaza for Memorial Day weekend, running May 25 through 27, 2024. The festival is produced by Detroit promoter Paxahau and spreads more than 100 artists across six stages on the downtown plaza.
The stages this year are the Movement Stage, the Waterfront Stage presented by JARS, the Pyramid Stage, the Stargate Stage, the Underground Stage, and the Detroit Stage. The Underground keeps its reputation as the hardest and most packed room on the grounds, set in the space beneath the plaza.
The top of the bill leans international. Fatboy Slim, Richie Hawtin, and Solomun are the headline names, joined across the weekend by James Blake, Dom Dolla, Chris Lake, Honey Dijon, and Floating Points. Goldie brings a live band for a 30 year anniversary celebration of his Metalheadz label, per the festival's stage and showcase announcement. Actor and DJ Idris Elba is booked for a back to back set with Detroit techno founder Kevin Saunderson, and Ludacris is on the bill as well.
The Detroit programming runs through the festival's showcase slate. Carl Craig brings his Detroit Love series to the Pyramid Stage in collaboration with the UK label Defected Records. Kevin Saunderson presents a KMS Records showcase. DJ Minx programs her House Your Life showcase, and Masters At Work take a showcase of their own. The Metalheadz anniversary rounds out a lineup of showcases that mixes Detroit institutions with visiting labels.
Tickets are sold through the festival's own site. A three day general admission pass runs $289 and a three day VIP pass runs $399, with a deposit and payment plan option that lets buyers reserve a pass for $50 down on GA or $55 down on VIP, per the official tickets page. Single day passes are also available. Three day passes have been moving, so the Saturday-heavy crowd should plan ahead.
The festival runs across the long weekend and closes on Memorial Day Monday. As in past years, the official afterparty circuit picks up downtown once the plaza clears, with rooms across the city programming late into the night.
Detroit's late May weather tends to run cool by the river. Layers are a safe bet.
