How we feature photos.

Now and then we feature a Detroit photographer's work on our Instagram. Here's how that works, in plain terms.

We ask first. We feature a photographer's photos only after they tell us yes, in a direct message or an email. A tag, a hashtag or a public account isn't a yes.

Credit comes first. “Photo: @yourhandle” is the first line of the caption, and we tag you on the photo. We also send a Collab invite, so you can have the post show on your own grid if you want it there.

We don't change your photo. We crop it to fit Instagram's frame, and that's the only change: no filters, and nothing laid over it unless you've told us that's fine. We never crop out or cover a watermark or signature. Our own reporting about the place goes on a separate slide.

It's still yours. You keep your copyright. A yes gives Strait Journal non-exclusive, unpaid permission to feature your photos on our Instagram from time to time, and nothing else. We don't use featured photos in ads.

Not too often. We feature the same photographer no more than once a month.

Changed your mind? Ask any time and we'll take it down, usually within a day. Message us on Instagram or write to [email protected].
