Dominoes is coming back to the table at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The museum's Cards & Culture series returns with Gentle Dominoes on Friday, November 6, 2026, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

It's free. The Wright lists the cost as free on its event page, and the Register button there takes you to Eventbrite to save a spot.

The museum is at 315 East Warren Avenue in Detroit.

The host is a returning one. Crystal P is Crazee "is back after hosting Gentle Spades," the museum says, and plans to keep the room laughing while people play.

The "gentle" part is the whole idea. The Wright says the night is about "keeping everything we love about the game and loosening our grip on everything that used to make playing it stressful."

If you grew up around a domino table, you'll know the scene the museum sketches on its page: an uncle "leaning back in his chair because he already knows what you’ve got in your hand," and that one relative "keeping score like the mortgage depends on it."

So who's it for? The page answers plainly. "Know how to play? Pull up. Never played before? Pull up."

The page even has a line for anyone who stepped away from the game: "Got yelled at once for playing the wrong bone and haven’t touched a domino since 1997? Definitely pull up."

Purists can relax, too. "And yes, you can still slap the bones on the table," the page says. "Some traditions are sacred."

That's a good fit for a game with deep roots at home. The museum describes dominoes as a game that "has lived on our kitchen tables, at family reunions, cookouts, barbershops, porches and neighborhood gatherings for generations." Gentle Dominoes brings that table inside the museum, at no cost, for a Friday night.

To go, register through the Gentle Dominoes page at thewright.org. Questions can go to the museum at 313-494-5800 or [email protected].

If you want to make a weekend of it, the museum's calendar lists Who Votes? Women Leading the Way the next afternoon, Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Later in the month, the Third Thursday program "Brothers, Show Your Love" runs Thursday, November 19, 2026, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
