Michigan Central Art and Newlab Detroit are accepting applications for their 2027 Creative Residency Program, a 12-week residency with a $30,000 unrestricted award for artists working at the intersection of art, technology, and society.
The program will select four to five artists across two sessions.
Session One runs February 8 to April 30, 2027, and Session Two runs May 17 to August 6, 2027.
That is the part that separates this from a check in the mail. Real shop time and a research runway inside one of the busiest rooms in the city.
The Art + Technology Fellowship Prize, supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, focuses on data, accessibility, and sustainability. The Art + Health Fellowship Prize, a partnership with Henry Ford Health, engages with care systems, wellness, and health equity.
"Creative practice helps us see possibilities that conventional approaches can overlook," said Kelly Kivland, a curatorial consultant on the program.
The health track leans on that same instinct.
For a city that keeps proving its makers and its engineers belong in the same room, the money and the machines are the point.
