The world's largest free jazz festival is under way in downtown Detroit, and this year the three main stages all sit in one place.

The 47th Detroit Jazz Festival opened Friday and runs through Monday night at Hart Plaza, and admission is free all four days.

The big change for 2026 is the layout. The festival pulled its three main stages, among them the Carhartt Amphitheater Stage and the Waterfront Stage, together inside Hart Plaza for better flow and easier access.

"At its core, jazz is about connection, and bringing the festival fully into Hart Plaza helps us deepen that connection," said Chris Collins, the festival's president and artistic director.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Friday and at 12:30 p.m. Saturday through Monday. Sets run late, to 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday and to 8 p.m. on Monday.

Water bottles are fine, and folding and beach chairs are allowed in marked areas. Outside alcohol cannot come in, though festival bars sell drinks on site.

The music is the reason to make the trip. Beyond the headliners, high school and university jazz showcases run throughout the weekend.

General admission is free, and VIP passes are available starting at $150 a day.

Programming does not stop at the river. The Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center at Wayne State University, in midtown, hosts the indoor Detroit Jazz Hall and after-hours sets that run to midnight on select nights.

Getting down there is simple without a car. The Detroit People Mover, the QLine, and FAST buses all serve the area, and several downtown garages sit within a short walk of the plaza. Cannot make it downtown at all? The festival streams online too.

Free jazz on the riverfront through Labor Day. Bring a water bottle, leave the cooler, and go.
