Juneteenth falls on Friday, and Detroit has filled out a two-day public calendar of free events tied to the holiday. The programming stretches from a slow bike ride around Elmwood Cemetery to a farm celebration in the North End, with yoga, riverfront programming, and a homebuyers fair layered across Friday and Saturday.
The Juneteenth Ride leaves the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, 315 E. Warren Ave., at 10 a.m. Friday after a 9:30 a.m. meetup. The 11-mile route passes through the historic Elmwood Cemetery before returning to the museum, where Juneteenth activities continue until 5:30 p.m.
Detroit Heals Detroit holds a Self-Care Freedom Breakfast at The Healing Hub, 19510 Alcoy Ave., from 9 a.m. to noon. The event is free and includes breakfast and massages. The thread running through most of this year's lineup carries a consistent framing: rest, care, and presence as chosen practice, not absence.
"Juneteenth at Wilson: Stories of Us" runs at Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park, 1801 W. Jefferson Ave., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. along the riverfront. The afternoon includes African drum and dance, poetry, an artist panel, and community conversations. Reservations are open online.
The University of Michigan Detroit Center, 3663 Woodward Ave., holds a session from 3:30 to 5 p.m. exploring rest as resistance and jazz as liberation, with meditation and an art activity. Full Lotus Yoga, 6505 Woodward Ave., closes Friday with a free slow flow and yin class from 5 to 6:15 p.m.
Saturday programming opens with two simultaneous 10 a.m. events. At Belle Isle, The Cleanup Club runs a beach cleanup at Belle Isle Beach House from 10 a.m. to noon. All supplies provided. In Marygrove, a neighborhood walking tour of the Civic Commons meets at Indiana Street Garden, 16253 Indiana St., for a two-hour walk through the network of green spaces and public infrastructure that make up the commons. A second tour is scheduled for July 18.
Huntington Place, 1 Washington Blvd., hosts the Homebuyers Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event connects prospective buyers, particularly first-time homebuyers, with lenders and information on credit, home loans, and down payment assistance. Vivica A. Fox delivers the keynote.
The Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund closes the weekend at Oakland Avenue Urban Farm, 9354 Oakland Ave., from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fund is in its seventh growing season. Funding applications for Black land stewards in Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park open June 19. Food and T-shirt purchases at Saturday's event support the next cycle of awardees.
Job listings at WDET, the Detroit Food Policy Council, and Detroit Horse Power are posted this week through the Detroit Documenters network.
