Memorial Day weekend in Detroit 2026: a guide beyond Movement

Memorial Day weekend lands Saturday May 23 through Monday May 25 in 2026, and Movement runs all three days at Hart Plaza. The festival posts its lineup and gate times at movementfestival.com, with the City of Detroit carrying its own event listing. The rest of the city stays open around it.

Start with the riverfront, which ties the weekend together. Hart Plaza is the festival footprint, but the Detroit RiverWalk on either side is free and walkable, running from the Joe Louis Greenway on the west end to Gabriel Richard Park on the east. The Outdoor Adventure Center sits along Atwater if you want the indoor option.

Belle Isle is a short drive across the MacArthur Bridge. Entry to the state park requires a Michigan Recreation Passport, which rose to $15 for residents at vehicle registration as of January 1, 2026, per the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The aquarium and the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory anchor the island, and the beach opens for the season. The giant slide typically reopens around Memorial Day, though it is worth checking the DNR's Belle Isle page before you go, since the 2025 reopening slipped into June after a safety inspection.

Eastern Market runs its Saturday market on May 23 from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., open year round per the market's own schedule. Note that the Sunday Street Market does not start until June, so the Saturday market is the one to plan around this weekend. The market's big flower event, Flower Day, already came and went on May 17, but flowers are not gone: Eastern Market has a Flower Tuesday market scheduled for May 26 in its sheds.

Restaurant patios fill out the rest of the weekend. Selden Standard, SheWolf, Lady of the House, Voyager, and the Corktown openings all run through the long weekend, and patio reservations for the busier rooms book out well ahead of Memorial Day. None of them are quiet on a Friday night before Movement.

The Movement afterparties take over the late-night calendar. TV Lounge, Marble Bar, and Spot Lite all run multi-night programs across the weekend, with the Tangent Gallery, the Russell Industrial, and the broader warehouse circuit filling in the rest. First sets tend to start around 10 p.m. and the longest nights stretch into the next morning.

For a quieter day, the museums are open. Check the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History for their holiday-weekend hours, which each post on their own sites. MOCAD is back in programming after its spring reopening. The Heidelberg Project on Heidelberg Street is open and free.

One scheduling note for baseball fans: the Tigers are on the road this particular weekend, away at Baltimore through May 24, per the published 2026 schedule. Their first home game back at Comerica Park is Tuesday, May 26 against the Angels, so an afternoon at the ballpark is a midweek plan rather than a weekend one this year.
