Spiedo, the Takoi team's Mediterranean rotisserie, takes the old Jolly Pumpkin on Canfield

The team behind Takoi is bringing its Mediterranean rotisserie concept to Midtown. Spiedo, the Ann Arbor restaurant from Brad Greenhill and chef Mike Goldberg, will take over 441 W. Canfield, the longtime Jolly Pumpkin space, with a summer 2026 opening planned.

Jolly Pumpkin closed the Midtown pizzeria and brewery this spring after about eleven years on the block. The company has said it intends to reopen elsewhere in Detroit, likely in a smaller space, but has not announced a location.

Spiedo opened in September 2023 at 307 S. Fifth Ave. in downtown Ann Arbor. The menu is built around two vertical rotisseries and a flat-top griddle, with flatbread sandwiches, rice bowls, and small plates. About half the menu is vegetarian friendly, and Goldberg, who runs the kitchen day to day, rotates dishes as the seasons turn. The cooking is mostly Mediterranean, which is how the room earned its "Mediterranean-ish" tag.

The Canfield space is larger than the Ann Arbor original, and the plan is to use it. Greenhill has told local outlets the Detroit kitchen will run a bigger dinner program and add equipment the first location does not have, including an oven and a grill alongside the rotisseries and griddle, per Crain's Detroit Business.

Greenhill is a known quantity in Detroit. He opened Takoi in Corktown in 2014, rebuilt it after an arson fire, and turned the eclectic, Thai-leaning room into one of the city's most decorated restaurants, with a James Beard nomination and a Detroit Free Press best new restaurant nod along the way. Spiedo is a different register: casual, daytime-friendly, and built to turn tables.

The Canfield stretch between Cass and Second is one of the densest restaurant blocks in Midtown. The old Jolly Pumpkin sits on the south side of the street, between Bon Bon Bon and Third Man Records, with Selden Standard and Avalon a short walk away. The patio that made the corner a summer fixture comes with the lease.

An opening date has not been set beyond summer 2026, pending a remodel. The team had not commented in detail at the time of the announcement.
