Bar Chenin is Michigan's only 2026 James Beard finalist

The James Beard Foundation released its 2026 Restaurant and Chef Award nominees on Tuesday, March 31, and one Detroit name made the cut. Bar Chenin, the small natural wine bar tucked behind the Siren Hotel downtown, is a finalist for Best New Bar. It is the only Michigan business named a finalist in any category this year, according to the Foundation's nominee list.

The bar opened in March 2025 in the Siren space that once held Albena, at 1509 Broadway St., Suite A-1. It is the kind of room that fits maybe a dozen people, and the program is built around natural wine, with cocktails, small bites, and house-made ice cream filling out the rest. The signature drink, the Heaven or Las Vegas, pairs milk-washed mezcal with amaretto and Strega.

The Best New Bar category, in the Foundation's own words, recognizes a wine, beer, cocktail, coffee, or other beverage-led business that opened between October 2024 and September 2025 and already shows excellence in drinks, sourcing, service, hospitality, atmosphere, and operations. The business can stand alone or sit inside another establishment, and it may or may not serve food. Bar Chenin checks several of those boxes from a back-of-hotel footprint most people walk past.

Owner Nick Arone has framed the bar around the people who make the wine. "Natural winemakers are people who are really against the grain," he told Hour Detroit. "These are people that really want to give you the cleanest, most back-to-earth product."

Bar Chenin competes against four other finalists: Bar, Please! in Boise, Clemente Bar in New York, Later Bye in Oklahoma City, and Loma in Providence. The award is decided at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony, set for Monday, June 15, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

The recognition lands after a strong local run. Bar Chenin had already placed on the Detroit Free Press list of the year's best new restaurants and dining experiences in metro Detroit. A ten-seat wine bar in the back of a hotel becoming the city's lone James Beard finalist says something about where the interesting work is happening right now.

A note on what came next: at the June 15 ceremony, the Best New Bar award went to Loma in Providence, and Michigan finished the night without a winner. That does not change what the March nomination meant, which is that the Foundation counted a tiny Detroit wine bar among the five most compelling new bars in the country.
