Apple opened its first store in downtown Detroit on Friday, September 19, with doors swinging open to customers in the late afternoon. The timing was deliberate. It was the same day Apple put the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air on sale worldwide, and Detroit was one of the cities on the launch map. Apple chief executive Tim Cook was in town for the opening.

The store sits at 1430 Woodward Avenue, next door to the Shinola Hotel, inside the D.J. Healy Co. Building, a 1910 structure that stretches across a row of Woodward storefronts. The building is owned by Bedrock, Dan Gilbert's real estate company, which spent years working to land Apple downtown. For a long stretch the city's core had every kind of retail anchor except this one.

Apple built a Detroit identity into the space rather than dropping in a generic store. The company designed a custom chrome Apple logo with a stylized "D" at its center, which it describes as a tribute to a city known for innovation and pride. The launch wallpaper reads "Hello, 313," a nod to the area code. Apple's own marketing framed the store as a place "where creativity thrives and business takes shape."

The design leans into the historic shell. The store uses timber columns, which Apple says is a first for any of its locations, and pairs the old building's bones with the company's usual clean lines. The Apple Watch display sits near the front of the store rather than toward the back. Apple says the location runs on 100 percent renewable energy.

The store is larger than its single storefront suggests. Apple lists roughly 6,500 square feet of retail space plus about 4,500 square feet of operations space behind it. Services include a Genius Bar by appointment, free Today at Apple sessions, Apple Vision Pro demos, and in-store pickup for online orders. The store validates two hours of parking at the nearby Z Lot Garage.

The retail opening is part of a wider Detroit push. In August, Apple opened its Manufacturing Academy in the city, a free training program run with Michigan State University that helps small and mid-sized manufacturers adopt smart manufacturing and AI tools. "We're thrilled to help even more businesses implement smart manufacturing so they can unlock amazing opportunities for their companies and our country," Apple operating chief Sabih Khan said when the academy opened. The academy is tied to Apple's pledge to spend more than $500 billion in the United States over four years. Cook visited the academy and the related developer program during his Detroit trip.

The new downtown store arrives as Apple closes its outlet at Partridge Creek in Clinton Township. Apple still operates Michigan stores in Troy, Novi, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, and Lansing. The one long-open gap was downtown Detroit, and it is now filled.
