Capitol Park reopens after a $3.5 million reset

Capitol Park is open again. The Downtown Detroit Partnership cut a ribbon on the downtown green space on July 23, 2025, capping roughly six months of construction that began in January. The park, a wedge of public land tucked behind the Westin Book Cadillac, had been closed since the start of the year while crews rebuilt it.

The work cost about $3.5 million, according to the Downtown Detroit Partnership. The reopened park has an expanded lawn, new gardens, a fresh canopy of trees, upgraded lighting, and green stormwater infrastructure that lets water drain through the ground instead of pooling on concrete. Free public WiFi runs across the space. The renovation turned a park that had been mostly concrete into something far greener.

The dog park stayed, and that was deliberate. The Downtown Detroit Partnership has said the redesign was shaped by what residents and nearby businesses told them they wanted, and keeping the dog run was part of that. Eric Larson, the partnership's CEO, framed the result as a space that grew out of its neighborhood. "I think I'm most proud of the way the park has embraced the surrounding community," Larson said in the partnership's announcement. The group describes the reworked park as an outdoor district living room for residents, visitors, and the businesses ringing the block.

Money came from several places. A grant tied to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation's Revitalization and Placemaking program seeded the project, with American Rescue Plan Act funds, the City of Detroit Downtown Development Authority, the Knight Foundation, and the Kresge Foundation covering the rest, per the Downtown Detroit Partnership. The design came from Toronto firm Public Work, with Turner Construction handling the build and the partnership managing the project. The whole effort traced back to a community-led master plan from 2017.

The ground here carries a lot of history. The park sits on a triangle laid out under Detroit's 1807 street plan. A territorial courthouse opened on the site in 1828, and when Michigan became a state in 1837 that same building served as the capitol until the seat of government moved to Lansing in 1847. The structure later became Detroit's first public high school before fire destroyed it in 1893. The block also sat near one of the last stops on the Underground Railroad in Detroit, marked today by a historical plaque honoring Seymour Finney. The Capitol Park Historic District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1999.

The blocks around the park have filled in over the past decade with restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and retail, and the apartments above them lean hard on the park as their shared front yard. The Downtown Detroit Partnership has managed Capitol Park since 2013 and plans to roll out a schedule of free programming now that the gates are open again.
