Supino Pizzeria brings dine-in back to Eastern Market

Supino Pizzeria turned the lights back on in its Eastern Market dining room on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, ending a closure that ran roughly fourteen months. The shutdown traced back to a fire on April 24, 2023 in the residential apartment above the restaurant at 2457 Russell Street. No one was hurt, but the blaze and the water that followed left enough damage downstairs to take the dining room out of service for close to a year.

During the closure, the kitchen kept its thin, foldable East Coast style pies moving out of Supino's second location in New Center. Carryout returned to Russell Street first, on April 23, 2024, timed to the crowds drawn downtown by the NFL Draft. Full dine-in followed about ten weeks later.

The room that reopened in July does not look exactly like the one that closed. Supino used the rebuild to refresh the front of the house, working with the Detroit design studios Midwest Common and Donut Shop, per Crain's Detroit Business. The pizza recipe stayed put. Owner Dave Mancini, who opened the original Supino on Russell Street in 2008 and expanded it into a full dining room and bar in 2014, is still in the kitchen for the dough.

In its own announcement of the reopening, the restaurant told customers to expect the familiar menu alongside a new look. "We're serving the same tasty pies as before but you may notice we've had a bit of a facelift," Supino said, adding that it was "so happy to debut it to the people of Detroit after being out of commission since April of last year."

Both locations are now running on set hours. The Eastern Market room at 2457 Russell Street is open Tuesday through Sunday, with the kitchen going until 9 p.m. The New Center location at 6519 Woodward Avenue runs Monday through Saturday into the evening, per the restaurant's own listings. Between the two, Supino is back to serving the city from both ends of Woodward.
