Brad Greenhill, the chef-owner behind Takoi, is bringing Spiedo to 441 W. Canfield. The Mediterranean-ish concept will take over the old Jolly Pumpkin space for a summer 2026 opening.
Jolly Pumpkin closed the Midtown pizzeria-and-brewery in March 2026 after eleven years. The chain said it intended to come back to Detroit in another location and has not announced where.
Spiedo's first room is in Ann Arbor at 307 S. Fifth Ave., open since 2023. The Detroit version will run a different menu and a bigger dinner program. The Canfield space is larger than the Ann Arbor original.
Greenhill's track record in Detroit runs through Takoi, the Thai restaurant in Corktown that has weathered a fire and a rebuild and is still cooking. Mediterranean-ish is its own register for him. So is the size. So is the block.
Canfield runs from John R to Trumbull, and the stretch between Cass and Second is the highest-density restaurant block in Midtown. Selden Standard is around the corner. Avalon is across the street. The Jolly Pumpkin patio was the most consistent summer-night seat in the neighborhood.
The bet is that the patio still works. The bet is also that a Mediterranean menu, in this register, can fill a dinner room that Jolly Pumpkin filled with pizza and beer. Different math.
The opening is summer 2026. Greenhill has not announced a chef de cuisine for the Detroit kitchen.
441 W. Canfield St., Midtown.
