On September 9, 2025, the World's 50 Best announced Ladder 4 Wine Bar as the inaugural recipient of the Resy One To Watch Award for North America. Ladder 4 is the first Detroit restaurant the 50 Best organization has ever recognized in any category. The award identifies a rising star whose distinctive vision has earned recognition on the North American stage.
The official ceremony was held September 25 in Las Vegas. The honor was kept secret for two months while the team waited. Ladder 4 is at 3396 Vinewood Street, in the southwest corner where Corktown bleeds into Chadsey-Condon.
The building is a 1910 firehouse. James and Patrick Cadariu, brothers, bought it in 2019 and spent three years restoring it. The original signage that read "1 ring" and "2 rings" still hangs on the walls.
The roll call book is on display. The bar is positioned where the Ladder 4 truck used to park. Firefighters have walked in and found their grandfathers' names in the book.
The wine program is led by chef and wine director John Yelinek and general manager Preston Smith. The list is low-intervention, weighted toward small family producers from Eastern Europe and the Old World. Yelinek runs a garden across the street that supplies most of the herbs and a fair amount of the produce.
The kitchen leans French-bistro with Detroit ingredients and a sense of humor. Vitello tonnato. Skate wing sandwich.
Salata de vinete. Branzino in grape leaf. The Sunday smash burger run is exactly 86 burgers, griddled at noon, dressed with cheese, house sauce, and locally made pickles.
They sell out before 1 p.m. nearly every week. The accolades arrived faster than the team expected. Restaurant of the Year in 2023.
Bon Appétit's Best New Restaurants 2023. The New York Times' America's Best Restaurants 2023. James Beard Foundation semifinalist nominations.
Now Resy One To Watch. Yelinek told reporters the award was meaningful because it suggests the entire city of Detroit feels like one to watch, not just Ladder 4. He's right.
The reservations book has been full since the announcement. The win does not change Ladder 4. The restaurant has been making the same case for itself, in the same firehouse, since February 2022.
It now has the trophy to prove other people noticed.
