On Monday, October 27, 2025, Castalia posted on social media that it would close on New Year's Eve. The bar had been open eight years, in the lower level of an 1880s Victorian mansion at 3980 Second Avenue, Midtown. The post said the team was choosing to "go out on top." Not out of money.
Not out of ideas. No problem with the landlord. No problem with the neighborhood.
Just done. Kevin Peterson and his wife Jane Larson founded Castalia in 2018. Kyle Dupree joined as a partner.
Erica Kassel joined the ownership group in 2024. The bar paired its cocktails with fragrances from Sfumato, a perfumery the same couple owns and operates from the same building. The space holds about twenty guests.
The room has had national press, international press, and a Pinnacle Award. Peterson wrote a book called Cocktail Theory while running it. He goes by Dr. Peterson because he has a doctorate.
The closing reason, as Peterson described it the same week, is that the lease is coming up and the bar's run has hit a natural ceiling. He has said the team built structures to climb to where Castalia got, and now those same structures are constraints. He framed the close as a question of finding new questions to answer.
New ownership and a new direction will take over the room after December 31. Sfumato will continue. Castalia will not.
A new menu, the Afterlife Menu, runs through closing. More than a dozen drinks, several alcohol-free. Reservations have been recommended for weeks.
The bar will keep regular hours through the end of the year. Daily Detroit has scheduled a happy hour there before it closes. Other goodbyes will be private.
The Detroit cocktail world does not produce many bars that close on their own terms after eight years. Castalia is closing on its own terms. The post that announced the close ended with a line about beauty arising from ephemerality and a point at which an experience must cease.
It read better than that sounds. Peterson's track record suggests whatever he does next will be worth tracking.
3980 Second Ave., Midtown. Open through December 31.
