If you've ever wondered what you'd actually do in the first minutes after a disaster, Detroit has a free answer starting this week.
The city's Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security is offering free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training beginning Thursday, October 29, at 13331 Lyndon.
The course runs across four sessions. Thursday and Friday, October 29 and 30, meet from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The two Saturdays, October 31 and November 7, go longer, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Training covers disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, AED use, wound bandaging, and basic medical treatment that includes burns, fractures, strains, and hypothermia care.
There's a payoff for seeing it through. Participants must complete all four sessions to receive their certificate of completion.
The training is free. To sign up, visit detroitmi.gov/emhs and search CERT, or call (313) 596-1742 for more information.
One dispatch a week. No tracking, no filler. Free, always.
