Austen Brantley's Coleman Young model takes shape, headed for the U.S. Capitol

The statue that will carry Detroit into the U.S. Capitol now has a face, and a Detroiter shaped it.

The completed model, which will be cast in bronze, is bound somewhere almost no Detroit artwork goes. It will replace Michigan's statue of Lewis Cass in the National Statuary Hall Collection at the U.S. Capitol, joining the state's other honoree, President Gerald R. Ford.

That swap runs through a formal request. In Senate Concurrent Resolution 23 of 2022, the Michigan Legislature asked the Joint Committee on the Library of Congress to approve replacing Cass with Young.

Paying for it has been a hometown effort. The Coleman A. Young Statue Initiative has raised more than $1.2 million to create the monument. Support has come from philanthropic, business, government and civic leaders, including The Kresge Foundation.

Now comes the wait. When it goes up, a Detroit mayor shaped by a Detroit sculptor will stand in the U.S. Capitol.
