Detroit passes 8 PM curfew for Fireworks night as the City gears up for June 22 show

Detroit City Council voted 6 to 2 this week to move the downtown curfew for unaccompanied minors from 10 PM to 8 PM on Ford Fireworks night, which falls on June 22. The fireworks fire off at 10 PM along the Detroit River, so the ordinance kicks in two full hours before the show starts.

The emergency measure applies to anyone under 18 who is in the designated downtown fireworks zone without a parent or an adult guardian age 21 or older. That zone covers the area bounded by the Detroit River, Third Street, the Lodge Freeway, the Fisher Freeway, Gratiot Avenue, Vernor Highway, Chene Street, Atwater Street, and the Aretha Franklin Amphitheater. Any minor caught in the zone without an adult will be taken to the Coleman A. Young Recreation Center at 2751 Robert Bradby Drive and held there until a parent or guardian arrives. The curfew runs from 8 PM June 22 through 6 AM June 23. If rain pushes the show to its rain date on June 23, the curfew applies then too.

The vote follows a stretch of "teen takeover" events downtown, where large gatherings of youth led to vandalism, fights, and escalating incidents. Last year a 17-year-old was shot on fireworks night. Councilmember Denzel McCampbell and At-Large Council Member Mary Waters both voted against the ordinance. McCampbell was direct about his reasoning. "It's not a question of whether you care about public safety or want people to be safe," McCampbell said. "My question is whether this is effective." Detroit police say they are not planning to randomly stop young people to check their age. The department describes the ordinance as a tool of deterrence.

The fireworks themselves are free and open to the public. Hart Plaza, Spirit Plaza, Erma Henderson Park, and Belle Isle all open at 2 PM on June 22. All four sites will close once they reach capacity, so earlier is better. Belle Isle will be closed before 2 PM and will allow up to 3,000 cars once it opens. Every site is a weapon-free zone with security screening at the entrances. Coolers and backpacks will be searched. Leave tents, alcohol, drones, and pets at home.

This year's show includes more than 10,000 pyrotechnic effects over the Detroit River, making it the largest public fireworks display in Michigan. WDIV Local 4 and Local 4+ will broadcast the show live. For families who want to keep their kids home and still catch the fireworks, that is the best option.

The ordinance was passed on an emergency basis tied specifically to the fireworks window. Outside that zone and those hours, the city's standard curfew remains in place.
